UK’s leading online pharmacy UK Meds lays groundwork for industry-wide DLT

Wednesday 05 August 2018, London, United Kingdom: Stratis, the project focused on blockchain as a service for enterprises, enters a major partnership with UK Meds, the UK’s fastest growing online pharmacy. Stratis’ blockchain solution will be used to prevent patients from making multiple orders of potentially harmful drugs from different online pharmacies. A major issue affecting all online pharmacies as recently highlighted by the BBC’s Panorama programme.

Online pharmacies have helped millions of people to get the medicine they need simply and quickly. With the shared Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) being pioneered by UK Meds the industry can tackle the issue of patient safety by co-operating and applying the latest technology available from Stratis.

UK Meds handles around 4,000 patient prescriptions each day. By working with other online pharmacies to implement a shared blockchain solution, the project creates a unique identifier for each patient. That identifier is the key to ensuring that doctors and pharmacies have a trusted and complete view of which patient is ordering which medication across the different pharmacies. Doctors and pharmacies can cross reference patients using a unique identifier assigned to each individual, preventing vulnerable people from obtaining too many drugs.

Joe Soiza, CEO at UK Meds commented:

“It has been possible for a small minority of addicts and fraudsters to cheat the system. By building a shared DLT and working across the industry to roll it out we’re taking the lead to protect all patients. It’s possible this blockchain might save the lives of people struggling with addiction.” He continued: “We have over 10 online pharmacies in the UK onboard already. It’s our ambition for this to become the de facto standard across the entire industry.”

Chris Trew, CEO, Stratis Platform added:

“This is a great example of blockchain being deployed where its unique qualities will make a real difference. The days of filling out multiple online forms, from different pharmacies to obtain unsafe levels of medication are over. With blockchain, the industry can cooperate on the critical issue of patient safety using a shared version of the truth.”

Stratis’ technology will also be used to improve UK Meds’ own supply-chain by deploying Stratis’ Smart Contracts in C#. The solution will ensure each shipment of medication is logged on the blockchain when produced by the manufacturer and at every point right the way through its journey to the pharmacy.

The deployment comes on the back of a string of releases from the Stratis team including Sidechains and the successful launch of its Smart Contracts in C# platform.
